A New Horizon
Three decades of work. One transformative next step.
For nearly three decades, Andean Health & Development has worked alongside Impoverished Ecuadorian communities to build sustainable health care.
What began as a small rural clinic has grown into two teaching hospitals, a physician residency program, a medical journal, manuals for rural doctors across the region, and a research institute. Campaign Cotopaxi represents the next stage of that work:
- building a new hospital that dramatically expands our ability to reach more patientsÂ
- training more health professionalsÂ
- Modeling how rural hospitals contribute to health systems around the global south
BUILDING THE FUTURE
Campaign Cotopaxi’s central mission is to bring easily accessible, high-quality specialty healthcare to Cotopaxi province with a state-of-the-art teaching hospital.
The Facility
Ushering in a new Generation
A desperately needed new 42-bed teaching facility in Pujili, Cotopaxi, Ecuador, Hospital Cotopaxi is set to bring generations of good health to one of Ecuador’s most impoverished regions. Through top-quality care Hospital Cotopaxi will:
- provide essential services right away
- create new university partnerships
- train the next generation of Cotopaxi’s healthcare professionals

Progress
How far we’ve come
Here’s a look at what we’ve raised and accomplished so far, along with the
milestones still on the horizon.
Development of the Concept - 2024
AHD thought deeply about how to expand the impact of the AHD model to a new part of the country with unique demographic conditions, a significant unmet healthcare need, and an opportunity to partner with new universities to expand training.

Location Selection - 2025
The Cotopaxi Province proved to be the ideal site – two miles above sea level high in the Andes, a very large impoverished indigenous population, and a region with woefully insufficient health infrastructure.

Groundbreaking - 2025
AHD acquired property accessible to local communities, and construction began in June 2025 in Pujili, Cotopaxi.

Hospital To Be Completed - Early 2027
A 42 bed Hospital Cotopaxi with intensive care services, specialized surgical care, chronic kidney disease treatment, high risk maternity care, and specialized outpatient services will be completed in early 2027.

Equipment Acquisition
AHD is collaborating with Safe Surgeries, an international Biomedical Engineering NGO that sources, repairs, and maintains hospital equipment and helps with final delivery in-country. Funds are needed for the equipment. Equipment expected to arrive in Ecuador late 2026..

Staffing
Keeping our model of having a staff made up of 100% Ecuadorians, the team continues to work through the recruitment and hiring process. Key personnel from Hospital Hesburgh will oversee the transition to the new hospital and are critical to our opening.

Hospital Opening
This will be opened in stages. We will begin in early 2027 with outpatient services including lab, pharmacy, and imaging services. Inpatient services, requiring 24/7 attention will follow. Intensive Care services will commence with the signing of contracts with the Ministry of Health.
Hospital Becomes Sustainable
Operational financial sustainability is the goal. Several years are needed to achieve this. Even with some patients paying out of pocket and government contracts, there is often a multi-year lag in payments. A core function of AHD is to finance that gap.
