U.S. Director, Development, Operations and Financial Management for Andean Health & Development
Full-Time, Remote in U.S. (preference within 2-hour drive from Milwaukee, WI)
The Opportunity
Andean Health & Development (AHD) is seeking a full-time, bilingual (English/Spanish) U.S.-based Director of Development, Operations and Financial Management to oversee multiple operational functions of the organization, including financial management, development, administration and communications. This exciting opportunity is only available due to the planned succession of the long-tenured employee currently serving in this capacity.
The Organization
Based in Wisconsin, AHD is a U.S.-based not-for-profit organization founded in 1997, that operates two teaching hospitals in rural Ecuador and a residency program for local Ecuadorian physicians, working through an on-the-ground affiliate called Saludesa. Saludesa also conducts in-country research and seeks to share its successful operational model with the greater global health community; recently AHD has been engaged by the G4 Alliance, a global surgery advocacy organization. AHD is led by Dr. David Gaus, the founding Executive Director, and a 26-member, U.S.-based Advisory Board, which includes an Executive Committee and four other standing committees.
AHD’s Mission
We are fundamentally changing health care in rural Ecuador. We provide quality, sustainable medical services today in our two hospitals/clinics, while training family physicians to become the rural health care leaders of tomorrow. Through the Andean Health Institute, we conduct research, measure our impact, seek to influence policy, and share the lessons we’ve learned with the global health community.

The U.S. Director of Operations is involved in all aspects of AHD’s U.S. development and operations, working in close collaboration with the founder/Executive Director and Advisory Board for an established NGO advancing its mission in Latin America. As a non-profit, AHD’s U.S. Director is expected to be resourceful, take initiative, be comfortable with ambiguity, possess cross-cultural competency and work well independently. Beyond the desired professional experience and skills, the ideal candidate also has high-emotional intelligence, collaborative relationship skills, professional presence, and can thrive in the congenial, innovative and visionary culture of AHD
Essential qualifications/skills
- Spanish and English fluency
- 5+ years working for a business, non-profit or academic institution in a management, finance or development role OR the completion of a non-profit masters degree
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Ability to prepare and interpret financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements and projections)
- Consistent attention to detail
Preferred qualifications/skills
- Experience securing grants and major gifts
- Familiarity with the global health landscape
- Working knowledge of WordPress, QuickBooks, Adobe InDesign, Mailchimp
- Geographic residence within two hours of Milwaukee, WI
Key Responsibilities of the Position:
Development
- Working with the Advisory Board, facilitate the fundraising of approx. $2M annually from individuals, foundations, and corporations
- With the Advisory Board and CEO, oversee a three-year campaign to raise $10M to construct and operate a new hospital in Cotopaxi, Ecuador
- Foster and sustain authentic relationships with donors and partners through regular communications and updates
- Identify foundation prospects and write grant proposals; monitor performance and reporting expectations
- Plan special events, including annual in-person Advisory Board meeting; annual bike ride fundraiser; donor/prospect events and site visits to Ecuador
Financial Management
- Develop annual budgets (AHD and Saludesa) and monitor spending of approximately $2M annually by the U.S. entity and $6M by Saludesa
- Prepare monthly financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow projections, forecasts, and financial charts
- Review and translate financial reports from Saludesa
- Prepare all information for annual audit and 990 submission
- Maintain accounting records in QuickBooks; pay bills; reconcile bank accounts; serve as authorized bank signer
- With input from the Investment Committee Chair, administer endowment funds
Operations
- In collaboration with the CEO and Executive Committee, serve as a thought partner and lead the process to define, prioritize, and execute organizational strategy
- Act as the liaison with the Spanish-speaking Saludesa leadership team in Ecuador on financial and operational issues
- Play a key planning role in financing, building, and opening a new teaching hospital in Cotopaxi
Communications
- Lead communications activities (including copy development/design) for marketing materials, quarterly newsletters (Adobe InDesign; Mailchimp), press releases, and donor communications
- Maintain, update, and troubleshoot website (WordPress)
- Create and execute social media campaigns; oversee promotional video production
Administration
- Support all U.S. Advisory Board activities in collaboration with Board Chair and committee chairs, including researching pertinent information, developing meeting agendas, and facilitating quarterly (remote) meetings
- Maintain AHD calendar and coordinate schedules
- Oversee HR functions, including administration of payroll, benefits, and insurance
- Supervise U.S.-based part-time development assistant (independent contractor)
- Monitor insurance policies and compliance with federal/state tax laws and governing bylaws; maintain relationships with accountants, attorneys, and vendors
Outreach and Academic Activities
- Collaborate in outreach efforts to the greater global health community
- Liaise with universities on global health research projects and student rotations
- Attend global health conferences to network with thought leaders and identify partnerships with like-minded NGOs
- Revise and submit scientific articles for publication
Travel Expectation: approximately 10%
Salary: $80,000-$100,000; commensurate with experience/qualifications
