In 2010, I spent some time at our hospital in Pedro Vicente Maldonado (PVM), the only one we had at the time. The hospital administrator told me she needed to take a trip to the coast for a meeting at a public hospital. Would I like to come along?

We arrived at a rundown clinic in a small, blistering hot coastal city. The floors were dusty, there was no air conditioning, and overflow patients lay suffering in beds that had been set up in the hallways. I felt a pang of gratitude for our clean, well-staffed, and well-equipped hospital in PVM.
