Watch Andean Health on Notre Dame’s What Would You Fight For Commercial
Andean Health & Development (AHD) is proud to announce the recent opening of our second hospital, Hesburgh Hospital in Santo Domingo, Ecuador.
In 2000, AHD opened its first hospital in the small rural community of Pedro Vicente Maldonado. In 2008, AHD added a residency training program that trains 6 local doctors a year in rural health.
Hesburgh Hospital is a big leap forward for AHD and Ecuador. The new 60-bed hospital is located in Santo Domingo, a community of 600,000 where there are only 151 public hospital beds, and a quarter of the residents live on less than $4/day.
The hospital campus includes a residency program that trains 58 doctors a year, a simulation lab contextualized for rural Ecuador, two operating rooms, a full ER, pharmacy, isolation wards, and in and outpatient wings. The hospital serves all patients who come through the door and will gradually move toward financial self-sustainability.
