Dr. Diego Herrera earned his M.D. at the Central University of Ecuador, and completed a residency in Family Medicine at the Catholic University of Ecuador in Quito. He subsequently studied Medical Anthropology and ultimately earned a Master’s Degree in Pedagogy and Research.  He is the Vice President of Saludesa, AHD’s counterpart in Ecuador, professor at two of AHD’s partner universities, the Universidad Luis Vargas Torres de Esmeraldas and the Universidad Católica de Quito.  Dr. Herrera has various publications on Health Anthropology topics, Family Medicine, and rural hospital administration.

55-year-old Marta has chronic kidney disease related to diabetes and hypertension. She has received hemodialysis a few times a week for the past year but missed a week of dialysis. Short of breath, she went to one of Ecuador’s public health centers outside of the small, coastal town of Quevedo.
