The Andean Health Institute on Hesburgh Hospital’s campus conducts meaningful public health and epidemiological research to make impact in the communities AHD serves. Here are the current initiatives:
- University of Wisconsin:
Rachel Sippy, PhD candidate, will be in Ecuador in mid-May studying mosquito-borne illnesses. A great summary is available here and also by watching Rachel’s video on her FB page. Michael Prough, Master’s student from ND, will be helping with the mosquito testing.
- Notre Dame:
Ali Bow, Master’s student, will travel to Ecuador in mid-May to begin the antimicrobial research in the new lab at HH which is under construction (almost finished) and funded by ND’s Eck Institute. We are waiting for IRB approval for Ali’s research and are in the process of purchasing lab equipment.
AHD and a team from Harvard have discussed a possible project on post traumatic stress of the victims of the earthquake. David recently wrote a protocol for this. They are also considering ways to mobilize mental health services (a bilingual psychiatrist?) from Harvard or BU to our hospital in Santo. We still plan to proceed with the original project on training AHD’s Family Physicians in psychiatry/psychology and studying the prevalence of mental health issues in the community (apart from the quake).
